Al - RN BSN - I've performed hundreds of catheterizations. Unless you've been catheterized both ways (with and without intraurethral anesthetics), and I have been, you wouldn't know how effective the anesthesia is. From personal experience and from many patient's stories, I can tell you that both can be painful, and both are uncomfortable. There aren't many doctors I'd trust over RNs to do this for me. And @ clay jenson, if you had two liters of urine in your bladder and couldn't pee, you'd be begging someone to do this. Every patient's experience is personal, so no one can judge him/her to be a "cry baby"
This is an inappropriate demonstration. There is no use of intraurethral anesthetic and the young male patient is in agony as the nurse forces the catheter into place. While he may have tolerated this unwillingly for the sake of not interrupting the video, it sets a bad example. This is blatant patient abuse. [Posted by a doctor]
